Mind, Spine & Spirit Aligned

Everyone wants to be healthy but what does that mean?  Everyone’s definition of health is different.  Some feel healthy as long as there is not pain, have three square meals a day and a bowel movement.  Others may need to feel happy, at peace, a sense of belonging and a contributing member of society.  In my humble opinion, health is a state of complete physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.  After 20 years of practice, I’ve found that most people are not enjoying true health.  They just get by and let life live them instead of them living their ideal life.

Physical health comes from properly nourishing your body.  Eating plenty of veggies, fruit, seeds, healthy fats, hormone free protein, unprocessed foods and drinking plenty of Kangen water(at least 1/2 your body weight in ounces).  Exercises and plenty of restful sleep are also huge players in the expression of true health.  One component that is often overlooked in the health paradigm is the structural alignment of the body and more importantly the spine.  The spine houses your life line.  Meaning that the brain controls every single function of your body and the way it does that is by sending messages down your spinal cord, through the nerves to every single organ, tissue and cell in your body.  Any injury to the spine or spinal cord can result in severe loss of function.  So in my not so humble opinion, the spinal structure and alignment is the most important aspect of physical health.  If you remember Christopher Reeves, he sustained a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed.  Nutrition was not going to bring that function back.  He clearly couldn’t exercise, sleeping in a wheel chair can’t be good and the stress of going from superman to a quadriplegic has to be an absolute horror.

That brings me to emotional and mental stress.  It has been well documented that severe emotional and mental stress can have a serious impact on health.  I see this with many of my chronic pain and autoimmune patients.  There is usually an emotional component to most, if not all diseases.  Adding meditation, exercise and breathing techniques plays a huge roll in these patients.  So how do you manage stress? I hope it’s not by eating, drinking and/or smoking.

The last piece of true health is spiritual wellbeing.  This is not a religion class.  This is about a connection to Source, Force, Universal Intelligence, God, etc. What you call it is up to you. The understanding that there is something greater than us and our interconnection with everything and everyone around is of utmost importance in order to experience unconditional love.  When we look at the creation of life, when two cells come together to form another life, we can begin to appreciate the miracle and interconnection of many past lives.  The ovum from your mother has genetic information from her mother and father which has genetic information from their parents and so on and so forth.  The body’s innate ability to unite two cells and form a 7 foot tall basketball player is a miracle.  There has to be a Force that drives all of this.  Even if you believe you are that force through pure free will and determination, something is driving this insane thing we call life.  You can strengthen your spiritual connection by counting your blessings. Don’t judge.  Love everyone as they are. Accept what is.  Change what you don’t like.  The only thing you can change is you.  One of my favorite practices is meditation and Kundalini Yoga.
